Breast Cancer Reconstruction
Cancer of the breast is a diagnosis that can change someones life permanently. Most often than not, if detected early, the cancer can be removed. This can leave the breast in an abnormal shape which can again affect the womans life negatively. What we offer is immediate or delayed reconstruction of the breast that has been partially or fully amputated (lumpectomy, partial or full mastectomy). The reconstruction will allow the breast mould to be there to fill the bra, or we can achieve a near normal looking breast, depending on what method we choose.
After a thorough consultation, both Dr. Stasch and you as the patient will decide on the best procedure possible. We offer a range of breast reconstruction therapies from fatgrafting (several small procedures), silicone implant or expander breast recon, or free DIEP flap surgery to recreate the breast after mastectomy.
Dr. Stasch has presented his series of patients who have received lipofilling (breast reconstruction using fatgrafting) in several international meetings, with amazingly natural results. He also formed part of the team of doctors who performed the first DIEP breast reconstruction in Eastern Africa in 2020 at the Aga Khan University Hospital. Since then, he and his team have performed several successful DIEP reconstructions in Kenya.
Breast Reconstruction Surgery
Breast reconstruction is achieved through several plastic surgery techniques that attempt to restore a breast to near normal shape, appearance and size following mastectomy.
Reconstructive breast surgery is a multi-disciplinary treatment, coordinated with cancer surgeons and cancer specialists (known as oncologists). Reconstructive surgery aims to rebuild the breast, either wholly or partially, to normalise the look of the breast and leave the patient with a symmetrical bust. It also aims to improve the patient’s body image and self-esteem, helping the process of recovery on a physical, emotional and psychological level. Breast reconstruction can be a complex procedure, often involving microsurgery techniques.
Dr. Stasch was part of a multidisciplinary team of Specialists performing the first ever microsurgical breast reconstruction following breast amputation (mastectomy) for breast cancer using microsurgical free flap surgery (DIEP flap surgery) at the Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi. We have since performed this operation on more than 12 patients, allowing them to lead a normal life after surviving breast cancer:
- Advances in breast surgery: Deep inferior epigastric perforator flaps (DIEP) after Nipple and Skin sparing mastectomies.
- Miriam Mutebi, Tilman Stasch, Radovan Boca.
- Annual Scientific Conference 2019, Surgical Society of Kenya, April 2019 Mombasa, Kenya.
Dr. Tilman Stasch is vastly experienced in this highly specialized technique, which was never before performed in Eastern Africa, through his work in the UK and Germany, where he was part of the teams doing breast reconstructions on a daily basis.
Dr. Stasch also is one of the leading breast reconstruction specialists using autologous fatgrafting, where the womans breasts are gradualy reconstructed using the minimally invasive lipofilling technique.
