Breast Enlargement Surgery

Breast enlargement in Kenya with silicone implants is the surgical placement of breast implants to increase fullness and projection of the breasts or to improve symmetry of the breasts. Breast augmentation is typically performed to enlarge small, underdeveloped breasts, breasts that have decreased in size after a woman has had children or has lost weight, or simply because the woman wants to enhance the size and shape of their natural bust. Breast enlargement is most commonly accomplished by surgically inserting an implant behind each breast, or by augmenting the breast volume with fat (lipofilling, fat grafting).

A feminine body image is important to many women, and that includes the appearance of their breasts. To suit most wishes, breast implants come in a variety of sizes, shapes and profiles to achieve a natural-looking physique. Other important features include the texture of an implant’s shell and the substance that fills the shell, like silicone.

Summary

  • General anaesthetic.
  • Operating time about 1 - 1,5 hours.
  • Hospital stay Day Case or 1 night inpatient.
  • Back to work after a few days.
  • Compression garments for 6 weeks.
  • Full exercise after 4 - 6 weeks.

Good Candidates for Breast Augmentation

Enlarging you boobs cannot be achieved through exercise and weight loss / weight gain efforts, so in order to achieve your goals for a breast that is firmer, more youthful-looking and more proportionate to your overall body image, then a surgical breast enlargement may be right for you, if:

  • You have the sense that your breasts are too small.
  • Clothing that fit well around your hips is often too large at the bust line.
  • You feel self-conscious wearing form-fitting clothing or a swimsuit.
  • Your breasts have decreased in size and lost their firmness after having children.
  • Fluctuation in weight has changed the size and shape of your breasts.
  • Asymmetry exists where one of your breasts is noticeably smaller than the other.
  • You are healthy, without medical conditions that impair healing or increase risk of surgery.
  • You have a positive outlook and realistic goals for what boob surgery can accomplish.

What Breast Enlargement Won't Do

Breast augmentation alone does not correct severely drooping breasts. If you want your breasts to look fuller and to be lifted due to sagging, a breast lift may be required in conjunction with breast augmentation. Breast lifting can often be done at the same time as your augmentation or may require a separate operation. We will discuss the options and help you in making this decision.

During the consultation, you will be asked about the results you would like to achieve from your breast enlargement surgery. This will help us to understand your expectations and determine whether they realistically can be achieved.

Breast Augmentation

Choosing The Right Size For You

We usually recommend that you bring some pictures to the consultation of what size you want to achieve. Generally, the size of the breasts should fit the rest of the body, to keep natural proportions. During the consultation, you will be given breast implant sizers that can be placed under the bra to see the possible sizes in front of the mirror. This will help you achieve the augmentation you desire and guide Dr Stasch which size to chose during the operation. Several intra-operative sizers make choosing the exactly fitting implant size even easier.

Breast Augmentation – The Operation

Breast enlargement surgery takes between one and 1.5 hours, and is done under general anaesthetic. The operation itself involves accessing and creating the pocket under the breast into which the implant will be placed, using the inframammary insertion route: an approximately 4 – 5 cm incision will be placed on the lower outer edge of the breast-crease, making it almost invisible. Once the pocket has been created, the implant is inserted and the incision wound is stitched. The implant usually fits snugly into the implant pocket avoiding any movement or rotation of the implant. The breast is then supported with adhesive tapes, which hold the breast in shape and allow a little compression, as well as best scar healing.

Breast Implant Choice

Dr. Stasch exclusively uses breast implants of the highest quality approved by the American FDA (Food and Drug Administration) and CE certified, in order to ensure the best product possible for our clients.

Motive ® implants are implants of the latest generation from one of the leading breast implant companies in the world. The implants contain a “gummy-bear” silicone gel with elastic and soft properties, making it feel like the real breast. The outer shell contains special layers to prevent any silicone gel leakage or rupture, with smooth or mildly textured surfaces. The Motiva Ergonomix ® implants create a natural composition which allows the implants to actually follow a woman’s movements, holding a rounder shape when lying down and assuming a natural tear-drop shape when standing up. We also use Motiva ® Round implants for a more enhanced look, especially in the cleavage and décolleté area for more fullness and roundness.

This latest generation implant does not need to be changed every 10 years, as was previously postulated. The implant company actually gives a special Safety technology Guarantee for any problems arising from its products. Motiva implants have a smooth surface.

Breast Augmentation – Implant Placement

There are a number of different techniques used to perform a breast augmentation, depending on the shape of the breast and the desired result. Implants can be placed either directly behind the breast (known as subglandular placement), or behind the breast and chest wall muscle (known as submuscular placement).

Special technique  the dual plane operation

When slender women with slightly drooping breasts seek enlargement surgery, Dr Stasch often performs this dual plane breast surgery, placing the implants partly behind the breast and partly behind the muscle.

A dual plane technique is perfect for women who have a mild amount of breast drooping and who are looking for a breast augmentation surgery that gives them the higher, more attractive position of a breast lift without the resulting scars associated with a lifting procedure. The implant is placed after a small incision is made along the base of the breast. Like other forms of breast augmentation surgery, a dual plane procedure is safe and provides aesthetically pleasing results.
The advantages of the dual plane breast augmentation surgery include:

breast implant placement
  • Decreased risk of capsular contracture – due to the submuscular position of the implants.
  • More natural appearance.
  • One small, inconspicuous skin incision.
  • More natural movement as you move.
Subglandular - Implant placement behind the breast

The insertion of implants behind the breast is a common enlargement procedure for large breasts, and the least likely to cause discomfort. This route is also the most effective for patients with slightly drooping breasts, resulting in fuller volume and better uplift. One must consider thou, that with this technique it is more difficult to create a natural shape in patients who are very thin. Usually implants are placed behind the breast and in front of the muscle in patients who have enough breast tissue to cover the entire implant.

Submuscular - Implant placement behind the muscle

The insertion of implants behind the breast muscle provides more padding, which is a key consideration for slender patients and those with very little breast tissue where the edge of an implant may be detectable through the skin. The muscle provides extra cover and helps to hide the upper portion of the implant, and so is strongly recommended for those whose ribs are visible.

Breast Implant Shapes

Round Or Tear-Drop Breast Implants

Historically, implants would either be round or tear-drop (anatomical) shaped. Round implants provide a bigger volume at the top of the breast, along with a deeper cleavage. Tear-shaped implants, meanwhile, can look more natural giving the lower breast pole more projection. With either of these options, there are varying degrees of projection, depending on whether you want your augmented breasts to look subtly or more noticeably pert. Motiva implants offer round and Ergonomix shapes. Ergonomix implants are also round, but are soft enough to take on the shape of a tear drop implant when positioning upright.

All currently available breast implants consist of an outer casing (the ‘shell’) and an inner filler material. The material is usually silicone gel. Breast implants also differ in a number of other ways: their surfaces (smooth, textured or polyurethane foam covered) and finally their size and projection (the amount by which they project forwards).

After Breast Enhancement - Recovery

  • You will be admitted on the day of surgery, and your length of stay depends on your recovery. Usually, you will stay in the hospital for the day or 1 night.
  • The first 2-5 days following your breast implant surgery you may feel stiff and sore in the chest region. Your breasts may feel tight and sensitive to the touch, and your skin may feel warm or itchy.
  • You will have tape dressings applied to stabilize your breasts. Drains (plastic tubes attached to a suction bottle) will have been placed to drain excess wound fluid and blood from each side. The drains will usually be removed after 1- 2 days. It is rarely necessary to keep them for longer if there is a lot of lymphatic drainage, to prevent the fluids from collecting in the wound. You will however be able to leave the hospital with the drains inside, if the wounds look fine.
  • Shape-forming tapes will have been fitted around the breasts after the surgery in the operating room.
  • Most people find breast augmentation surgery not that painful. Post-operative pain in these procedures is easily controlled with tablets. Some bruising and swelling will occur initially, but this will disappear gradually. Most residual swelling will resolve within a month to 3 months.
  • On the day following surgery, we will encourage you to mobilize, in order to reduce the risk of deep venous thrombosis. You will also be fitted with a special breast garment that will measured before the surgery, to support your breast in the following weeks. You will be encouraged to wear this for about 8 weeks following the operation.
  • You will be mobile immediately after you have recovered from your general anaesthetic on the day of surgery and should be back to full exercise within six weeks. Skin stitches will NOT be removed as they are absorbable. Most people have approximately 1 week off work following a breast augmentation procedure, depending on the type of work you do. It is important in the first 3 weeks to avoid any activities, which can cause stretching of the incisions and too much upper body movement.
  • You may experience difficulty raising your arms. You should not lift, push or pull anything, or engage in any strenuous activity or twisting of the upper body and chest muscles.

We will keep a close eye on you after your surgery and would normally see you for your follow-up appointments at regular dressing clinics every 2-3 days and then 6 weeks and 3 months following surgery, at which point your post-operative photographs will be taken.

Results After Breast Augmentation

The breasts will be swollen and appear very large immediately following surgery. You will be required to wear a compression garment for several weeks following your procedure to minimize swelling and support the tissues as they heal. The swelling will gradually decrease, and your breasts will develop a softer and more natural shape over time. It may 3-6 weeks for the final result to fully develop.

The results of your breast augmentation surgery will be long-lasting. You will find it easier to wear certain styles of clothing and swim wear. Like many women who have had breast augmentation, you may also have a boost in self confidence.

It’s important to know that after receiving breast implants, results are not always permanent, due to skin, weight fluctuations and gravity. It is natural to lose some firmness and projection over the years. The implants may require replacement during your lifetime. If, after a period of years, you become dissatisfied with the appearance of your breasts, you may choose to undergo a breast lift or implant exchange to restore a more youthful contour.

What Complications Can Occur?

Whilst these operations are generally safe in the hands of a qualified and experienced plastic surgeon and regarded to be highly successful, there are, as with any operation, risks involved and the possibility of complications that patients need to consider.

Smokers are advised to discontinue smoking several weeks prior to surgery and after the operation, as smoking increases the risks of complications and delays wound healing by altering blood circulation in the skin. You can reduce your risks of complications by closely following our instructions before and after the surgery.

Postoperative pain will vary from person to person, but this is generally not considered a painful procedure.

Most patients are delighted with the physical and cosmetic improvements that breast augmentation brings. There might be minor asymmetries between your breasts, which might have been there beforehand already, which might be exaggerated following the surgery. Dr Stasch will make a point to demonstrate this to you before the operation and he will decide on the approach needed to be tailored according to this.

Occasionally patients will bleed immediately after the operation and need to go back to the operating room for this to be dealt with. Wound healing problems occur extremely rarely. There is also a small risk of infection. These risks are less than 1%, but if they do occur will result in reoperation. A degree of altered sensation in the breast area is very common after breast enlargement. This usually gradually gets better, but there is a slight risk of losing nipple sensation completely. Hardening, or encapsulation, around the implant is also a potential risk, and up to 10% of women over a ten year period will experience this problem (this is called capsular fibrosis or capsular contracture). The breast shape is likely to gradually change as time goes by. In the case of most women this will not trouble them, but sometimes the shape is not as good as it was and further surgery might be considered.

Recent scientific evidence suggests that it may be recommended that you take prophylactic antibiotics when any dental work is done to protect the implant from infection and capsular fibrosis for a short period of time.

Some patients can feel or see the edges of their breast implants under the skin. Sometimes visible folds and ripples become evident. The implants that we use at Valentis Clinic are the most modern, latest generation implants, with a high degree of reliability. Theoretically however, the envelope can gradually fail and a microscopic leak can occur (silicone bleed). This is not usually a serious event, but once detected will necessitate removal and exchange of the implant.

There is no universally agreed replacement schedule for breast implants, and it is rare for there to be a need to exchange breast implants before ten years. However, you may develop one of the problems described above and may need or choose to have revision surgery at some time in the future. For this reason anyone having breast enlargement should be prepared both personally and financially to have a further operation at some time.

All breast augmentations result in some scarring although the nature of the scars will depend on the patient`s ability to form nice scars. Scars tend to be reddish / brown in the first six weeks, changing darker over next three months and then fading. Most patients will form good quality scars over time, but occasionally and unpredictably some patients will get lumpy scars (keloids) that do not improve unless treated.

Breast Enlargement FAQ

If you are at an age when mammographic examinations should be conducted on a periodic basis, it will be important for you to select a radiology technician who is experienced in taking x-rays of augmented breasts. Additional views of your breasts will be required. They might, in some instances, recommend other types of examinations such as ultrasound or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Interestingly, it is actually easier to detect early breast cancer IF you have a silicone implant.

It is a common misconception that once a woman has breast implants, she can’t breastfeed. Dr. Stasch has operated on many women who have gone on to successfully breastfeed their babies, with no negative effects. That said, every woman is different and it’s important that patients have enough info before they decide for or against breastfeeding their baby following a breast augmentation.

It is impossible to predict the change in augmented breasts after breastfeeding. As a rule, women with smaller breasts would generally expect less change to occur when breastfeeding, compared to those with larger breasts. In both natural and augmented breasts, genetic factors such as skin quality and elasticity are the major factors that influence whether breast shape is likely to change.

We normally recommend 6 to 12 months post-op to allow the augmented breast to completely settle before falling pregnant. Recovery time can vary from patient to patient so it is important that you are prepared to be flexible should recovery take a little longer than anticipated.

Breast augmentation will not affect a mother’s milk supply. As long as you are being operated on by a reputable surgeon likes Dr. Stasch and there has been no damage to the milk ducts or nerves during surgery. Some women find it difficult to breastfeed and a woman can have a poor milk supply regardless of whether they have implants or not.

(For the mother or the baby) A common fear among women is that their implants may “leak” and be toxic for a breastfeeding baby, however there are no known dangers to either the mother or baby when breastfeeding with implants. The implants used at Valentis Clinic are made of a cohesive silicone gel that remains within a solid membrane and does not “leak” into the body, even in the rare case of a rupture. The chances of an implant leaking or rupturing are exceptionally low.

While the implants remain unchanged with pregnancy and breast-feeding, the tissue surrounding them may change shape. Regardless of whether a woman has implants, her breast shape can change during or post pregnancy based on factors including genetics, age and skin quality. Since there is no sure way to tell whether a breast will or won’t sag following pregnancy and breast feeding, Dr. Stasch advises to delay the augmentation if a patient is concerned about this and is considering having children in the not too distant future. After the pregnancy and breast feeding, we recommend waiting for 6 months before undergoing surgery, as this will ensure that all natural breast changes have occurred.

Smokers are strongly advised to discontinue smoking several weeks prior to surgery and after the operation, as smoking increases the risks of complications and delays wound healing by altering blood circulation in the skin. You can reduce your risks of complications by closely following our instructions before and after the surgery.
