What is Bariatric Surgery?
Also known as weight loss surgery, Bariatric Surgery is a medical procedure that is carried out to help you lose excess weight. It is performed by a highly trained specialist known as a Bariatric Surgeon using modern techniques and technology. Depending on the chosen procedure, bariatric surgery can result in either a change in the operation of the digestive tract or a decrease in the overall size of your stomach.
All bariatric surgeries are minimally invasive and are carried out using small incisions on the stomach. It is extremely safe and patients experience less pain, have shorter hospital stays, recover quickly and have fewer complications as compared to patients of other surgeries.
Weight loss surgery is useful in the treatment of obesity and obesity-related diseases such as Type 2 Diabetes, High Cholesterol, and Sleep apnea. By undergoing this procedure you will not only get to achieve a healthy body mass index (BMI) and overall weight but also an improved and higher quality of life.
In Kenya, the Nairobi Bariatric Centre offers two types of Weight Loss surgery procedures:
The Gastric Bypass – Which works by adjusting the digestion and absorption process of food and nutrients.
The Gastric Sleeve, which limits the amount of food you take in.
The procedure chosen depends on your overall goals and unique conditions. The trained and qualified surgeons at the Nairobi Bariatric centre will measure your BMI and help you choose the most appropriate method to achieve your weight loss goals.
If you are not ready to commit to surgery, the Nairobi Bariatric Centre offers the Gastric Balloon Procedure which is an alternative to Bariatric Surgery. The balloon is inserted endoscopically and filled with saline water to take up almost half of your stomach space. This supports weight loss in two ways:
- Reducing the available room in your stomach for food.
- Restricting the passage of food and water through your stomach.
The Gastric Balloon is a temporary weight loss option that lasts approximately 6 months.
Who is Eligible for Bariatric Surgery?
Eligibility for weight loss surgery is primarily determined by your Body Mass Index (BMI).
To be considered for bariatric surgery you must either:
- Have a BMI of 40 or higher.
- Have a BMI of 35-40 and have diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnea, or any other obesity-related diseases.
- Have a BMI of 30-35, and have previously tried other weight loss alternatives to no avail.
However, it is important to note that you may still be eligible for bariatric surgery if you do not meet the above criteria. If you have a BMI of over 27 and are unhappy with your current weight, you may be eligible for bariatric surgery. Speaking to highly trained doctors at the Nairobi Bariatric centre will help you determine the most appropriate solution for you. Alternatively, you may consider the Gastric Balloon option.
